Pesticides – Farmers Optimum Savior Weapon

Global population has been gradually increasing with every passing day and so is the demand for food. In contrast, land suitable for agriculture is limited and not enough to cater to the soaring demand for food. To address this crisis, a slow and controlled release formulation of pesticides is being used in farming. The formulation includes specific types of retarding agents, which are instructed to release their constituents after a specific time interval. These agents can be incorporated through different types of systems, such as migration control without membranes, monolithic system, migration control by membranes, and laminate system.

Global Warming Leading to Greater Use of Pesticides

The three major product-variants of pesticides are herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. Out of the three, herbicides are likely to attract greater demand in the agriculture sector. Growing awareness regarding healthy diet and increasing population are two major factors driving the demand for herbicides. For instance, a newly registered Loyant herbicide developed by Dow AgroSciences can be used in rice fields to prevent unwanted grass, aquatic weed, and sedge. The company has been providing innovative solutions to versatile industries since 1950. According to researchers at the firm, Loyant can control barnyard grass and pertinent sedges, such as rice flatsedge and yellow nutsedge.

Fungicides are also facing significant demand in the agriculture sector due to reasons similar to herbicides. These types of chemicals are used to kill fungi. Fungicides are so strong that they can sometimes damage the crop being grown. Therefore, such chemicals are usually used as a preservative to clear unwanted plants and avoid any crop damage. High-tech sprays are being developed to safeguard farmers from such harmful chemicals. For instance, a weed scientist from Agriculture Canada, along with an engineer from University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI), is developing a software for pesticide sprayers. This software will help sprayers identify only weed and not crop through the cameras and sensors installed on it.

Market Insights

Growing population and increasing demand for food are two major factors driving the slow and controlled release pesticides market. In addition, global warming has affected climatic conditions of many places. Such climatic changes trigger the growth of pests such as moths, beetles, insects, and aphids. Watching this instigated growth of pests, companies manufacturing slow and controlled release formulations are relying on innovation to stay ahead. Advanced pesticides are designed to render high efficiency and reduced pricing. Increase in demand for such advanced pesticides from the agricultural sector can augment the market at a CAGR of 7.3% during the forecast period (2017-2025), states Grand View Research, Inc. in a recent report.

Some of the prominent players in the market are BASF SE, The Dow Chemical Company, DuPont, Bayer AG, and Monsanto Company.
