How Does Nylon 6 and 66 Affect Car Mileage?

Nylon 6 and 66 are polyamides derived by polycondensation of adipic acid and hexamethylenediamine. These polymers use raw materials such as caprolactam and ammonium sulfate for their production. They are abbreviated as PA-6 and PA-66 respectively.

Nylon 6 & 66 Market

PA-66 fibers are used in the production of textiles due to its resistance to friction, heat, and stains. Due to these characteristics, INVISTA uses these fibers for the production of its Antron carpet fiber. PA-6 resins, on the other hand, are utilized in films and engineering compounds.

Myriad Uses of PA-6 and PA-66

The guidelines outlined by environmental agencies to produce products that have minimal impact on the environment during production and disposal are being considered by major polyamide manufacturers. Masland Contract, one of the biggest carpet producers, uses recycled yarn found in U.S. landfills and combines it with PA-66 to create sustainable carpets.

Automotive manufacturers wary of these guidelines have begun to actively opt for PA-66 components due to its temperature resistant abilities. Inclusion of PA-66 in under-the-hood components may also increase the mileage capacity of cars. In fact, the popularity of nylon 66 has led to BASF acquiring Solvay’s polyamide sector in 2017.

PA-6 films are being increasingly used in the food and packaging industry due to its ability to keep food fresh. Foods being commonly packaged include meats, chilled fruit juices, dried foods, and cheeses. Other uses of these films include cosmetics, electronic equipment, and medical products.

Market Overview

The worldwide nylon 6 and 66 market is set to reach a market size above USD 40 million by 2025, according to a report published by Grand View Research, Inc. The market is anticipated to exhibit a CAGR above 6% from 2014 to 2025 (forecast period). Increased use of these resins by the automotive sector to reduce the weights of components is expected to drive global market growth in near future.

Rising demand for nylon 6 in paper, textile, consumer electronics, and medical sectors can spur global market in the forthcoming years. However, volatile prices of raw materials can be a deterrent for market growth. Key market players include DuPont, Toray Group, Huntsman Corporation, and BASF SE.
