Use of Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) to Increase with Rising Focus on Environment Sustainability

Recycling post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles is a more feasible option than their production due to low energy consumed during the former process. Recycled polyethylene terephthalate is being increasingly used in various verticals such as cosmetics, electronics, pharmaceuticals, construction, beverage bottling, and packaging of food.

Recycled polyethylene terephthalate, commonly called RPET, is the most widely recycled plastic worldwide. As per findings of the PET Resin Association (PETRA), nearly 1.8 billion pounds of PET were recycled in 2015. RPET has the ability to resist growth of mold, bacteria, and fungi.

Manufacturing Uniforms Using Recycled PET Plastic Bottles

Companies are pouring sizeable funds into research and development of RPET in order to expand resins’ scope of application. Several organizations worldwide are incorporating RPET into their offerings to attain environmental sustainability. In July 2017, Nike introduced uniforms for NBA players that were made using a combination of recycled polyesters and alpha yarns. Each uniform represented 20 recycled PET plastic bottles. This allowed Nike to make light and super athletic uniforms. These uniforms also dry quickly.

Market Insights

Burgeoning consumption of beverage products can allow the global recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) market to gain tremendous momentum. Changing perception of end users and consumers toward sustainable usage of plastics is likely to drive the market, finds Grand View Research Inc. Initiatives such as tax reliefs and financial benefits offered by several governments can also support market growth.

Other factors such as ban of landfills and increasing tourism are also expected to provide a significant push to the market. On the other hand, harmful emissions due to recycling of PET are adversely affecting the environment. This, in turn, can hamper the growth of the market.

Some of the prominent companies in the market are Indorama Ventures, Ecostar Plastics (Placon), M & G Chemicals, Verdeco Recycling, and Haiyan Haili Green Fiber Co. Ltd.
