Octadecanedioic Acid Makes Powder Coatings more Durable

Octadecanedioic acid is also known as C18 or ODDA. It is extensively used to synthesis adhesives, nylons, and polyamide and is used across an array of applications such as lubricants, powder coatings, pharmaceuticals, etc.

Powder Coating with ODDA

Powder coatings are sprayed onto metal or conductive surfaces; resulting powders are then melted and oven cured to harden and provide the article with highly glossy surface. The C18 or ODDA improves the flexibility and impact resistant coating due to its longer and more elastic methylene chain. Moreover its melting point is at 124°C, which allows it to be used into the existing production line with virtually no process change.

A number of varied resin chemistries are used for powder coating, glycidyl methacrylate acrylic (GMA) of powder coatings, giving them their durability, high gloss, and abrasion resistance. This often makes it a frequently used resin preference for high-performance applications. GMA resins have higher epoxide functionality and are crosslinked with diacids such as dodecanedioic acid (C12). C18 diacid has the capacity to improve flexibility and impact resistance of the coating. The Inherent C18 exhibits superior properties such as chemical and water resistance as compared to shorter-chain alternatives.

When coated on metal test panels, it shows high gloss, solvent resistance, good adhesion and durability. These attributes make it a better alternative to C12 diacid.

Inherent ODDA by Elevance

Illinois-based Elevance Renewable Sciences has launched a commercially available Inherent C18 Diacid. The process used to make this product results in better purity required for polymers. On converting the diacid into another difuctional group such as diol or diamine, it enables the creation of many more polymers with over 100 news formulations. This ODDA can also be used to make polyamide market, which can be used for new electronic and automotive applications requiring toughness, hydrolytic performance, and enhanced optical prosperities.
